6 Ways to Empower Your Career and Leave Burnout at the Door

In the world of entrepreneurship, female founders often find themselves facing burnout while navigating the challenges of balancing their work and personal commitments. Entrepreneurship on the surface is often portrayed as a thrilling journey of innovation and achievement, but for female entrepreneurs, the road is often laden with a distinctive set of obstacles.

And now, with the holiday season fast approaching, the pressures on female founders are even more pronounced. In this blog I’ll share more about the critical importance of avoiding burnout during this hectic time of year and how maintaining your physical and mental well-being isn’t just a personal choice, but a fundamental part of the success and sustainability of your businesses. After all, the simple truth remains: If you’re not good, your business won’t be either.

From breaking through the glass ceiling to juggling the numerous responsibilities of work and home life, women are faced with a plethora of unique challenges, ranging from systemic gender bias to the constant balancing act between professional and personal responsibilities.

In this blog, I’ll help you uncover the six ways to empower your life and career while leaving burnout at the door.

  • Tip 1: Prioritize Self-Care, Time Off & Breaks

In the hustle and bustle of our modern lives, it’s easy to neglect our well-being. Even with the best of intentions, when life gets busy it’s often the first to get cut from the list. But when that happens, it’s not long before burnout comes knocking on our door. The good news is that you can prevent this exhaustion by prioritizing self-care in your daily routine, and creating a schedule that makes it easy to do and hard to cut.

Before you say it, let me say it first. I know a lot of people talk about self care. It’s not a new concept. But what they don’t always talk about is how it correlates to your business and your bottom line. So, when I say self-care what I really mean is being intentional with  nurturing your physical, mental, and emotional health. This allows you to recharge and maintain a sense of harmony in your business and in your life.

To ensure you’re incorporating these practices effectively, remember to schedule it into your calendar. It’s easy to say you’ll do it someday, but by adding your self-care into your calendar first, even if it’s just time to stop and even go for a short 10-15 minute walk outside can be a game-changing practice to add to your day. By embracing these self-care strategies, you’ll find yourself feeling happier and healthier.

  • Tip 2: Delegate and Outsource

Delegation is a vital tool in the arsenal of any successful business leader. The power of delegation in business cannot be overstated, as it allows you to focus on your overall mission while entrusting other tasks to capable hands. Identifying the right tasks to delegate is the first step in this process.

By analyzing your workload, you can pinpoint activities that could be handled by others, freeing up your time and mental space. But who should you delegate to? There are various hiring and outsourcing options available, each with its advantages. Virtual assistants are an excellent choice for administrative and repetitive tasks, while freelancers or team members offer specialized skills for one-off projects.

In some cases, co-founders or partners can be your trusted allies in the delegation process, sharing the responsibilities and workload to ensure your business thrives.

  • Tip 3: Time Management Techniques

In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, time management plays a crucial role in not only ensuring productivity but also in avoiding burnout. For female founders, in particular, who often juggle multiple roles and responsibilities, effective time management techniques are essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Two valuable strategies that can make a significant difference in the life of a female founder are prioritization using the Eisenhower Matrix and time blocking. The Eisenhower Matrix helps you prioritize and delegate by categorizing tasks into four quadrants. This helps you get really clear on how to best allocate your time effectively so you can focus on what truly matters. It can also help you eliminate tasks that don’t contribute to your long-term goals.

Additionally, the practice of time blocking allows you to allocate dedicated time for essential tasks that is uninterrupted and free of distractions. I myself carve out time for Cave Days. These are days where I keep my calendar clear of any meetings for both my clients and my team, so I can stay heads down on important tasks. I communicate when I plan to have a cave day so I am sure not to be bothered except for emergencies, which are also defined to my team.

  • Tip 4: Build a Support Network

In today’s fast-paced and competitive world, the value of a strong support network cannot be overstated. Building a network of mentors, advisors and peers can be a game-changer in one’s personal and professional growth. These experienced individuals can offer guidance, share insights, and help you navigate the complexities of running a business.

Female founder groups and memberships are great for networking and provide an excellent platform to connect with like-minded individuals, exchange ideas, and build valuable partnerships.

Two groups in particular that I am a part of are The Entreprenista League and Like-Minded Collective. Each of these groups serves me in different ways and I am so honored to be building community and real friendships with women in each membership. The best way I do this is by approaching each group from a service mindset. I don’t expect that just by being a part of the group my business will grow, rather each day I show up inside of each community and serve by answering questions, connecting people with others who can help with a problem or even present and share free value. This is how you grow your business. You can’t expect to simply show up and reap the rewards. Like anything, it’s an investment of your time, energy and dollars.

Because I show in my communities with this mindset, I’ve had the privilege to be on Good Morning America, in 2023 I won an Entreprenista 100 Award and this year I’ve co-hosted an Entprenista podcast, Startups in Stilettos. Beyond that I’ve built very personal connections and have gotten comfortable with being vulnerable and learning from others.

Whether you’re a budding entrepreneur, a seasoned professional, or someone looking to broaden their horizons, investing in a community can be the key to unlocking your full potential.

  • Tip 5: Set the Right Goals

Setting achievable goals is a pivotal step towards success. Notice, I didn’t say realistic goals. Understanding the significance of establishing achievable goals is the foundation upon which any thriving enterprise is built.

So, how do you go about ensuring your business goals are achievable? Two key strategies come into play: SMART goal setting and breaking down long-term goals into smaller, manageable milestones. The SMART approach, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, helps you craft precise and achievable goals that align with your business’s vision.

Additionally, breaking down those daunting long-term objectives into smaller, more manageable tasks not only makes them less intimidating but also allows for consistent progress tracking. By mastering these techniques, you can have success with greater ease, efficiency and confidence.

  • Tip 6: Embrace Technology

Let technology and automations help you. Learn how to leverage the power of technology to optimize your operations to reduce your workload. Learning how to use cutting-edge tools and software not only streamlines your daily tasks, but also empowers your support teams through smart training strategies.

From productivity enhancers like AI-driven solutions to social planning platforms such as Planoly and data organization tools like Airtable, women entrepreneurs are making the most of technology’s capabilities. Project management tools like ClickUp keep projects on track, while CRM and email combo tools like Klaviyo enable seamless communication and collaboration. IF you’re interested in learning more or even using any of these tools, you can see a full list of my affiliate recommendations at the conclusion of this blog.

The real game-changer, though, is automation – email sequences and workflow configurations, although they may require initial setup which does take time, in the end they ultimately free up your valuable time and ensure tasks are efficiently executed. These tech-savvy strategies are enabling female founders to stay ahead in the game while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Recognizing the signs of burnout is a crucial first step towards reclaiming your well-being and productivity. Once you realize you need help, these tools and strategies can support you in taking that first step. I want you to understand that you don’t have to navigate this challenging journey alone.

Like I shared above, I have built a small army of women who I can turn to when it gets hard, when I need someone to talk to who just “gets it” and who will be there no matter what. That’s how you combat burnout. If you want to build your army too, consider joining The Entreprenista League or Like-Minded Collective. I am happy to answer any of your questions and share my first hand personal experience.
